Institute for Fusion Theory and Simulation, Zhejiang University (IFTS, ZJU) has been established on Oct.23, 2006, with the purposes of excellence in research, training, and collaboration. It is the first of such research centers in China. IFTS directly addresses the need in further enhancement of China’s advanced studies in fusion theory and simulation, to provide theoretical support for domestic fusion programs and China’s participation in ITER project and to cultivate more plasma physicists in fusion study.
Three Focused Physics Teams (FPTs) have been established with senior researchers and students from a number of universities and institutes in China and around the world. They will help to concentrate intelligence, knowledge and experiences of domestic and overseas fusion scientists, enhance the functions of the existing tokamak programs in China, utilize the advanced research resources more efficiently, so as to achieve internationally recognized results in the topics selected within one or two years, and establish a solid base for human resources training and cumulation as well as the sustainable development in the future by promoting education along with scientific research.
The 1st International West Lake Workshop on Fusion Theory and Simulation has been held Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China on 18th -22nd, Mar. 2007. In the workshop, lectures, talks and discussions focused on two key subjects— turbulence and coherent structures in plasmas and laser plasma interaction.
The workshop was hosted by Institute for Fusion Theory and Simulation (IFTS), Zhejiang University, with about 102 participants from the United States, Japan and Germany. There were 27 talks presented including invited talks and oral talks. The postdocs and graduate students were encouraged to make poster presentations.
