The 4th Trilateral International Workshop on Energetic Particle Physics

(October 26-27, 2024, Hangzhou, China)

Introduction

This workshop series originated from the ENEA-IFTS Workshop on Fusion Theory and Simulation, held in Taormina, Italy, on October 2-4, 2013. It was then decided to extend participation to experimental area and to Korea researchers. Thus, the meeting became the “Trilateral International Workshop on Energetic Particle Physics” to promote collaboration between China, Korea and Italy, with the 1st meeting held in Hangzhou on Nov. 9-12, 2017, organized by IFTS; the 2nd meeting held in Seoul on Nov. 10-12, 2019, organized by KFE; and the 3rd meeting held online on Nov. 7-10, 2022, organized by CNPS at ENEA.

The 4th workshop had a total of 53 participants. The meeting was organized in six invited sessions and one poster session, with 19 invited talks and 17 poster presentations. The meeting was completed with a final discussion session on the second day of the workshop. The workshop included one overview talk on the status of DTT tokamak, 12 presentations on Energetic Particle (EP)-driven instabilities, 7 presentations on cross-scale interaction between EP, EP-driven modes and micro-turbulence as well as EP interaction with MHD modes, 3 presentations on EP transport due to 3D fields, 3 presentations on new codes developed for Alfvén Eigenmodes (AEs) and Energetic Particle Modes (EPMs), 3 presentations on theory and simulations of micro-turbulence, and, finally, 7 presentations on simulations of MHD and kinetic MHD instabilities.

There was substantial progress in collaborations between China/Italy/Korea since last meeting as evidenced by following workshop presentations, publications etc.

1.Effects of Zonal Fields on Energetic-Particle Excitations of Reversed Shear Alfvén Eigenmode: Simulation and Theory, L. Chen et al.

2.Nonlinear interaction between drift wave and toroidal Alfvén eigenmode mediated by zonal structures, Z. Y. Qiu et al.

3.Frequency chirping fluctuations in magnetized plasmas, F. Zonca et al.

4.Calculation of toroidal Alfvén eigenmode mode structure in general axisymmetric toroidal geometry, G. Y. Wei et al.

5.Publications on energetic passing particle-driven instabilities in KSTAR: experiments and simulations, H. Jhang et al. (PPCF 23), L.L. Zhang et al. (NF24)

6.Lagrangian coherent structures of energetic particles in the presence of resonant magnetic perturbation, T. Rhee, M. Falessi et al.

Final discussion session

At the final discussion session, the participants discussed possible collaborative research to be carried out in next two years or so. The following possible topics and tasks were suggested:

1.Cross-scale interaction between EP, EP-driven modes and turbulence

2.Analysis and prediction of EP-driven instabilities and EP transport in experiments

3.Validation of modeling related to EPs by joint experiments

4.Exploration of possible experimental observations of KTAE mode in tokamaks within diagnostic capability

Next meeting

KFE or KAIST will host the next workshop in Korea in 2026. The exact time and location will be announced in due time.
